"IT'S A MARSHMALLOW WORLD"..THE SONG
"It's a Marshmallow World" is a
popular Christmas song that was written in 1949 by Carl Sigman (lyrics) and Peter DeRose (music).
Although it has been recorded by many artists, it was first a hit for Bing Crosby backed
by The Lee Gordon Singers and the Sonny Burke Orchestra. He didn't like the song and refused to record it at first. Crosby's contract required him to sing it and later his was glad he did as his version recorded in 1950 peaked at number 24 on the pop singles chart in January
1951.
TUFA BIRDHOUSES
These fun birdhouses are more decorative than "real' in the sense that the hole is pretty large. My favorite birdhouses have wren-sized holes and are lighter in weight. These decorative birdhouses make great accents in the garden however, and while more bulky, they can even be hung.

PAINTING WITH BULBS...
It's really hot when you plant three colors of tulip bulbs together. I am not too fond of planting them however and so I like to dig a large hole and make mass plantings. The only problem is that finding a large space to do this in the garden right now is always a challenge. I ended up planting several clump areas so there will be the statement/restatement thing going on. I am excited to see these three strong varieties together, each seems to scream for the spotlight....should be a fun riot of color!

WE WELCOME OUR NEW APPRENTICE- BRANNON
Brannon is a freshman at Shawnee Mission West
this fall and comes to us with some background in mixing concrete and making hypertufa. He and his brother took our Hypertufa Studio with their Grandma two years ago and really did a great job. It is exciting to see these young men work so creatively with these mediums. Brannon is also artistic which goes a long way when you are a studio assistant here at From the Summer's Garden. Welcome to the group Brannon and just in time for It's a Marshmallow World!

FUN AFTER THE FROST
Now that frost has put the kabosh on many things growing in the garden, it's time to have a little fun. Clean out the dead and damaged plants and rake the soil smooth. Draw simple designs or words in the soil using the end of your hoe handle. These lines are ideal little furrows for planting winter wheat seeds. You can buy seed on-line or at your garden center. Be generous in your planting so your designs and words are well-defined.
Cover the furrows with surrounding soil and tamp the entire area flat with your hoe. Gently water the area and keep it moist. In about four to five days the design or words will emerge in fresh green sprouts.
It's quick and easy and just in time for...
Halloween...
or Christmas.
